Answer: Camp Wingate*Kirkland is a small, co-ed, overnight camp designed on six principles: community, tradition, trust, respect, choice and fun. Our program incorporates athletics, arts & crafts, swimming, boating, performing arts and community service while encouraging individuality and ensuring skill development. Campers design their own summer through daily choice. In the morning at Planning Session children learn about what is being offered on that particular day and then make their own activity selections. This offers children an empowering experience to discover who they are and follow their own passions and interests. Children feel an incredible sense of belonging and are encouraged to voice their opinions and feelings. After dinner the entire Camp community meets at Evening Forum to discuss what has occurred during the day. Campers and counselors use this time to share accomplishments made throughout the day, acknowledge counselors or friends for help or support, or to make suggestions about ways to improve Camp. We pride ourselves on being unique and encouraging diversity, and recognize that this attracts a very special kind of child. Our campers are not the most athletic or the most popular. They are the ones who are sometimes very quiet but have a special quality that needs to be let out. They want to be self-expressed but are inhibited by the social pressures that exist in school. We all know how that feels. They are interested in things like learning to play the harp, archeology or playing bridge. A Wingate*Kirkland camper is inspired to explore the endless possibilities that Camp, and life, has to offer.
