Answer: Organized in 1904 and formally incorporated in 1905, Michigan Audubon is the state's oldest conservation organization. The early history of the organization was dedicated to securing protective legislation for birds at a time when the millinery industry was harming songbird populations. Through the devotion of its early conservation-minded founders, Michigan Audubon was recognized nationally for advocacy and education efforts. Today, Michigan Audubons commitment to birds remains steadfast through our mission, our pillars, and our programs that allow us to respond as a community and a nonprofit leader to the needs of birds and their habitats. Michigan Audubons expansive network of protected grounds, or bird sanctuaries, continues to grow mindfully and protects in perpetuity habitat from Jackson County to Michigans Keweenaw Peninsula. Currently, Michigan Audubon maintains a membership of nearly 3,000 individuals, businesses, and organization supporters. There are 32 active local chapters of Michigan Audubon statewide who serve as a representation of our mission to connect birds and people for the benefit of both and birding groups and advocates for the environment and wildlife in Michigan communities.
