Answer: Urban Avenues is a collective of individuals who want to use their talents to connect disconnected neighborhoods in Birmingham. Businessmen, chefs, filmmakers, leaders, entrepreneurs, photographers, educators and artists of all forms partner to impact students through their two main initiatives. One of the ventures is called Five Loaves seeks to forge new relationships between distant neighborhoods in Birmingham by creating a dinner experience that brings people together. Birmingham chefs, including John Hall, Wil Drake, Zack Redes and Zebbie Carney create and teach students menus which they prepare and serve at beautiful dinner gatherings. The goal is to create simple, beautiful connecting points for communities that have been separated by economics, social isolation and the passage of time. Another venture, Fish Camp Films, apprentices high school students from across the city for three years and teaches them the discipline and freedom of film. Birmingham filmmakers and creatives from all different walks of life teach students about film technique, production, and story formation. They work to tell the stories of unsung heroes, courageous entrepreneurs and their own families.
