Answer: With the recent Arab Spring taking hold across much of the Middle East and North Africa, Alternative Strategies Institute (ASI) the organization, and ASI the approach is more relevant than ever. ASI eschews the typical Washington-based academic models of Strategic Communications, Operational Assessment and Risk Mitigation. Rather than working from the outside, using soda-straw surveys and polls to peer into local populations for limited insights, then developing what we think are clever messages and blowing them back at local populations, we prefer to work 'from the inside,' at the grass-roots level. This makes us unique: we are focused on getting to know the local populations as well as our clients. Our multi-discipline team has significant expertise and experience working in both hostile and non-hostile areas characterized by active civil unrest, anti-Western sentiment, evolving regime changes, or a growing embracement of social change and democratization. By combining a low-profile, supportive security philosophy with a development approach focused on locals-helping-locals, we continually find there is more space than commonly accepted to empower civil society groups. ASI combines "on-the-ground" deployed team (anywhere, any time) with a reach-back analytical cell to leverage strategic communications/media analysis to measure and mitigate risk using rigorous and measureable assessment tools and innovative bridge-building instruments.
