Newly implanted tissues have insufficient vasculature to meet oxygen demand and experience "hypoxia" or critically low oxygen supply. This leads to degeneration, tissue death, and scarring. These problems present an unmet need which is currently only addressable with repeated surgeries. We are developing a therapeutic to supply oxygen to soft tissue grafts (such as skin, fat, or cartilage) to minimize tissue degeneration, promote more effective healing, and reduce scar formation. We aim to serve patients who have suffered disfiguring facial injuries. Long-term, we anticipate our therapeutic will be used to ensure the success of other difficult-to-transplant cell and tissue replacements, such as pancreatic islet cells or bioengineered tissues.
