Answer: Paumanok, the Indian name for Long Island, is a mix of Old World wisdom and New World technology. Charles and Ursula Massoud's vineyard employs dense European spacing and single-trunk vines. Charles was born in Lebanon to a family of hoteliers and restaurateurs, and Ursula in Germany to a family with a long tradition of winemaking. A mutual love for fine wine led them to the North Fork. Together with their three sons, they oversee every aspect of viticulture and winemaking at Paumanok. The Massouds' meticulous canopy management and a thorough fruit-thinning regimen consistently yield ripe, high-quality grapes. As in the Old World, the same people who grow the grapes craft the wine. The goal is "to make the wine in the vineyard" and let the terroir express itself. The hallmark of Paumanok wines is their authenticity and purity, genuine varietal character, and their remarkable acid balance. At Paumanok, the Old World is born again in the New World, both in wine and in spirit.
